A Movement Skills Programme for Children with Special Needs

children2_579616117.jpgChildren on the Move is a movement and play therapy programme designed to improve each individual child’s cognitive processing, perceptual motor skills, and sensory integration abilities. The programme engages padegoically appropriate approaches, systematic instructional learning methods, and positive communication techniques to provide children with special needs extra guidance and assistance.

The programme will benefit children with:

  • Autism
  • Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)
  • Developmental Dyspraxia
  • Dyslexia & Dysgraphia
  • Learning difficulties
  • Mental retardation
  • Motor impairment
  • Motor learning difficulties
  • Neuromuscular disabilities
  • Perceptual-motor dysfunction
  • Speech delays


Children with behavioral and learning disabilities usually have underlying co-ordination, movement and sensory difficulties. Motor proficiency needs to be addressed as it can hinders academic learning, daily life functioning, motor development, self-concept, and social skills.

The motivation behind Children on the Move is to:

  • Enhance the cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development of children with special needs
  • Improve attention span and ability to follow instructions
  • Provide a fun and positive environment for the children to learn and develop their full potential
  • Improve the child’s self-concept and self-esteem

Programme Structures:

  1. Personal Programmes
    - One child per movement specialist
  2. Group Programmes*
    - Two children per movement specialist; or
    - Four children per movement specialist

All programme structures include:

  • Pre-evaluation of child’s movement abilities and skills by a kinesiologist
  • Child’s interests and goals together with his/her educational and medical history are taken
  • A minimum of a 12-session intensive programme that is uniquely designed for the child’s ability, skill and age
  • Follow up home play activities
  • Post-evaluation of child’s progress & recommendations
  • Group programmes are subjected to the availability of suitable children for pairing
